Pop Up Festival in Sarajevo is a festival that promotes local and regional creative artists. It is a festival where students have the opportunity to meet with eminent lecturers, creatives, designers, illustrators, animators, etc. This year's theme for the Pop Up Festival was animation and character design. Festival is organized and run by students of the Academy of Fine Arts, with the support of professors. From what I could see, they are doing an excellent job :) 
This year, Edin and I had the honor to give a lecture to students about character design and animation. We were talking about drawing, sketchbooks, designing characters, 2D / 3D animation and studio production, and we showed them some of our works. We talked about the potential, the creative progress, challenges and possibilities of doing creative work in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina in general. What impressed me personally is that there is a zeal and interest among young people, mainly students, who are trying to find a niche in which to present their creativity and express their ideas. For my part, they have my full support!  

It's really inspiring and encouraging when you hear from student after the lecture that you inspired him to start drawing in his own sketchbook every day ... Well done man, that's the attitude !!! This is honestly a great recognition for myself also, because I personally believe that this is the best way and the path to success in the creative world; drawing, drawing, drawing and more drawing!  

We held a workshop at the Academy of Fine Arts, where the students of graphic and product design had the opportunity to learn about the principles of 3D animation. They also had the opportunity to feel what it's like to work in a team, and directly participate in the production of the predetermined animation pipeline. My personal experience from the workshop is great; students have expressed a keen interest, and after two days of workshops we were able to do a short animation which showed that they easily acquired the knowledge that we offered to them: D I can only say congratulation to students and workshop participants :)

The festival hosted several exceptionally  creative artists, designers, illustrators and animators from the region (from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina), who talked with the students and guests of the festival about animation, production, character design, drawing and the like. Students had the opportunity to learn from the creative people who have years of experience working in the creative industry, and are recognized in the region and beyond; Stiv Cinik, animator from Croatia, creative team Linnch, animators and illustrators from Serbia, Toni Huml, animation and post-production, Mireldy, creative team of designers, Voganj, animator from Belgrade who is famous for his short animations on You tube. It was a great honor that the Pop Up Festival organizers also invited me and my brother Edin to present to the students what we do; character design, illustration and 2D / 3D animation. 

All praise to the organizers of the festival and the team that took part in the organization and lectures. Definitely one of the best festivals in which I participated. See you next year, certainly. All creative people who are interested in art, design, animation, production, video, etc. and want to socialize and meet with creative people, I recommend that you definitely visit the Pop up festival next year :D

Together with my twin brother Edin Durmisevic we participated as illustrators on one exceptionally interesting and awesome project, a book about the Bosnian kingdom; it's a book about medieval Bosnian kingdom, kings, nobles and general history of medieval Bosnia. We had an honor to work as illustrators bringing to the viewer the characters and events from long past times. It was complex project, a daunting task and challenge, but it was worth it :) We also had an opportunity to work with really creative and intellectual professionals, designers, historians, illustrators, artists etc. You can see the details about the book on the OFFICIAL SITE.

Illustrations of historical battles; the biggest challenge for me was illustration of historical battles, because I had to present correct armor, flags, coat of arms, several historical persons, dynamic actions and interesting composition. The battles are the combined work with my brother; together we defined the method and technique, composition, characters and all historical elements :)

Illustrations of different scenes: I illustrated several historical events from the history of Bosnia, trying to represent the time and events with the aim of bringing them from past to the modern viewer. 1) knights tournament at Budim in 1412, 2) Siege of Split in time of Bosnian ban Matej Ninoslav, 3) wedding of Bosnian king Tvrtko II and Hungarian noble Dorothy Garai.

Illustrations of maps; I illustrated the maps by using the references and inspiration from the maps located in the National museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Illustrations of Coat of Arms; the book has several historical Coat of Arms of Bosnian nobles and kings. I illustrated the coat of arms by studying old manuscripts and historical references. The idea was to reconstruct the coat of arms of the major Bosnian noble families and rulers/kings.

- It is essential and immensely important, in my opinion, to have personal creative pipeline; although I use different techniques, depending on specific aesthetics and subject matter, in this post I will present to you, step by step, the creative process and pipeline of creating my illustration, the "Troll and the girl". 
The first step is always sketching, drawing and designing the characters, composition and deciding on the story line, if there is one. I usually first draw rough sketches and define the characters and try to pose them in the best composition. After that, I do detailed sketch/drawing, accentuating the details, accessories...

- After finishing the sketching of illustration, the next step is defining the gray values in the composition; here I focus mostly on the light and shadows. At first the gray scale is rough and basic, but in next several iterations I put focus on light/shadow defining and accentuating the forms...

- After finishing the gray scale phase, I fill in the rough and basic colors (I try to use one defining color key, with small variations, but this is not always the case). The process of filling in the colors sometimes takes several iterations also....

- In most of my illustrations I like to leave the contour drawing as overlaying layer at the top of the layers stock (I always use multiply blending mode) because I like the aesthetics and how it looks; personally I think that it has powerful and strong effect of old school illustrations. At this time I apply textures (the textures can be made by myself or based on realistic photographs or stock images etc), but this is not always the rule. It really depends on what you want to achieve. 

- We arrive at the end of my illustration pipeline and this short overview tutorial :D  And here is the final illustration. At this phase I like to adjust the color hue and saturation, maybe tweak the lighting and, if necessary the color value (worm/cold color corrections). I was invited to hold workshop and lecture about Character/concept design and illustration at the International University in Sarajevo (http://www.ius.edu.ba/bs). I was honored to pass my knowledge and experience to the young and eager students.

I presented my character designs, sketches and illustrations. During the workshop we talked about the illustration, character design and development, working in production, beginnings as illustrator and character designer, collaboration with other artists all around the world, Illustrator and Photoshop. The students also showed me some of their character sketches (historical characters); I was impressed :D

My production process of the cartoon vector character Odin;

1.) sketching; defining the pose and general characteristics of the character, props, style and aesthetics.
2.) line art; defining the final line art with all details. I do this in illustrator or by hand.
3.) color & materials: final color of the character, with light and shadows (optional).
4.) coloring of the line art: coloring of the line art drawing. This is optional because black color works good to. It depends on your aesthetic preferences.
5.) final vector illustration: combination of the color and colored line art, with optional background.

If you want to improve your drawing skills, I recommend reading a book "Drawn to Life" (volume One and Two). This book is great; beside the good read, you can do several exercises and see examples provided by the author, Walt Stanchfield, one of the greatest Disney animators and one of my inspirations for the dynamic drawing. I have read it several times, and I always come back to it when I feel a need for inspiration and creative guidance.

One of the most important "artistic" problems is practicing to draw male and female figure. I decided to make personal project of drawing 2000 figures in three months. At first the idea was to draw as many poses from my head as possible, without using the references. That is the best way to exercises and build your "mental" archive and gallery. Using the references is absolutely legitimate also :)

Here are the progress and the results of my project; first image shows my figure drawings at the beginning of the task (with not so good poses, insecure lines, problematic proportions...). Second image shows the progress after three months of daily figure drawings (body proportions are much better, lines are firm and controlled, poses are more dynamic and expressive).

Here are several other pages of sketched poses of male and female figure. I posted these drawings to inspire you to do similar project. The fact is, the only way to improve your drawing is to find time, sit down and draw, draw, draw.... Good lack :D

Hi everyone!
This is my old/new blog. The focus of this blog will be on creative development, with emphases on sketching, illustration and digital painting. I will show here some of the pages from my sketchbooks, my digital paintings, comics, animations, and I will share some tips and techniques in drawing and digital painting with the aim of personal creative development and motivation to you, the visitor to my blog :D
My creative premise was and still is: „What we know is just a drop in an endless sea of knowledge. Our aim should be to grab a glass of water from that sea. Ask yourself, what could you achieve with bucket“ :D
